Jewelry artist Yael Sonia is well known for her modern, chic, innovative, cutting-edge designs. Having lived and traveled throughout the world, Yael developed a sophisticated artistic palate.
Born in Boston, Yael was raised mostly in New York, spending summers with her family in France and six years of her childhood in Brazil, where she returned following her studies. After graduating from Barnard College/Columbia University, Yael went directly to Parsons School of Design to study Product Design for Metals and Jewelry.
Since 1998, Yael Sonia’s career as a jewelry designer has rapidly evolved, earning her international recognition and critical industry acclaim.
Yael’s creations are timeless; each piece unique, bold and sophisticated. Her ingenious designs have gained her public praise and international awards. In 2002, Yael won the Tahitian Pearl Trophy, International Design, for her “Spinning Wheel” necklace, from the Perpetual Motion Collection. Her work has been exhibited in world-renowned shows and galleries in Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
Yael was inspired by movement in children’s toys, drawn to the notion that jewelry could be interactive, thereby creating her Perpetual Motion Collection. This kinetic jewelry is comprised of rolling spheres, swinging pendulums and spinning tops made of 18K gold, pearls, diamonds and fine gemstones; each piece comes alive with the wearer’s movement.
In Brazil, Yael was not only exposed to the vivid world of gemstones, but was also introduced to talented goldsmiths and stone cutters who have worked with her to enable her to have the freedom to carry out her vision from concept to final form. Yael started incorporating these dazzling gems into her modern creations. In her Rock Collection, the sleek design of the metal is worked around the gemstones which remain the focal point.
Currently Yael creates at her studio/showroom in São Paulo, Brazil and exhibits her work at local and international shows and galleries. In April, 2007, she opened the first Yael Sonia art jewelry boutique at 922 Madison Avenue in New York City.
